Almost four years after of the death of Diego Armando Maradona, an ongoing trial in Argentina has uncovered new information about his last hours of life. Eight health professionals are facing charges of alleged medical negligence and manslaughter with malice aforethought.
Two forensic doctors who participated in the autopsy of the Argentine star recently testified in the San Isidro court, providing key evidence that reinforces the hypothesis that Maradona did not receive proper medical attention.
Showed signs of agony

Mauricio Cassinelli, a medical examiner who was present both at Maradona’s home and at the autopsy, stated that the former soccer player showed “signs of agony” in his heart, and that these signs could have been detected beforehand.
According to his statements, Maradona would have been in an agonizing process for at least 12 hours before his death, between 9:00 am and 12:00 noon on November 25, 2020.
Maradona’s heart weighed almost twice as much as normal for an average adult, and his lungs were “full of water,” indicating untreated heart failure.
In addition, the report determined that he had been accumulating fluid in his lungs for at least ten days.
Official cause of death

The official cause of Maradona’s death was acute pulmonary edema, caused by exacerbated congestive heart failure.
No traces of drugs or alcohol were found in the body, as confirmed by toxicological analysis.

Federico Corasaniti, another of the forensic experts, pointed out that the death was neither sudden nor unforeseeable.
He indicated that a basic medical check-up would have been enough to notice serious symptoms: swollen abdomen, abnormally colored lips, respiratory distress, and abnormal sounds when auscultating the lungs.
Inadequate hospitalization

Cassinelli also emphasized that the house where Maradona died was not a suitable place to carry out a home confinement.
This reinforces the allegation that the medical team failed to meet the minimum standards of care necessary for a patient with his condition.
The trial continues with the appearance of more expert witnesses in the coming weeks.
The defense expects to present other reports contradicting these conclusions.
However, the forensic doctors’ statements are an important twist in the judicial process, which could last until mid-2025.
This case has reopened the debate in Argentina about medical liability in public figures.
It has also generated great interest in the U.S. Hispanic community, where Maradona remains a soccer legend.
