The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, affirmed on Tuesday, November 4, that the alleged plan of US President Donald Trump to send military attacks against facilities and leaders of drug cartels in Mexican territory “is not going to happen”.

“It is not going to happen. We have an understanding on security that we have been working on for many months with the U.S. Government and we agreed on it when the Secretary of State (Marco Rubio) was there. And we are going to continue working within that framework of understanding,” the president said during her morning press conference.

The Mexican president’s reaction comes after NBC on Monday revealed Trump’s alleged plans for what would be an expansion of his anti-drug trafficking operation in the Caribbean and Pacific.

Sheinbaum defended Mexico’s sovereignty and territoriality, and emphasized that with the United States there is “collaboration and coordination without subordination”.

“So, that’s not going to happen, we don’t have any reports that that’s going to happen. Besides, we disagree and we have raised it with President Trump,” he concluded.

The Mexican president accepted that in some phone calls she has had with her U.S. counterpart, the latter has offered to help her by sending troops and other mechanisms to fight organized crime.

Sheinbaum insisted that it is about sharing information and conducting training on both sides of the border, in addition to reinforcing seizures of weapons coming from the US.

“It has been made clear that we do not agree with any process of interference or interventionism and that we collaborate and coordinate and we are a sovereign state,” he said.

According to information revealed by NBC, Trump’s plan includes sending troops and intelligence officers to Mexico, although it does not specify a clear date for the start of the mission.

If implemented, U.S. forces would belong to the Joint Special Operations Command and would primarily use drones to dismantle drug labs and target cartel members and kingpins in Mexico.

However, according to the sources cited, the mission that would be planned for Mexico would not be aimed at undermining Sheinbaum’s government.

Last February, the Trump Administration designated drug cartels as terrorist organizations. A month later, reports began to emerge of a new anti-drug operation in Mexican territory.

Last September, The Washington Post reported that the White House and Pentagon reportedly held back suggestions by DEA officials, who earlier this year urged the GOP administration to carry out a series of military strikes on drug cartels in Mexican territory.

Although Trump has on several occasions hinted at his willingness to target Mexican drug cartels on his territory, his administration has so far refrained from doing so and has highlighted the remarkable collaboration with Mexico on security issues.
