San Joaquin County authorities confirmed that the number of wounded has increased to 15 following the shooting that occurred on Saturday night in Stockton, California, during a children’s party at a restaurant where nearly 100 people had gathered. The attack also left four people dead, including three children aged 8, 9 and 14, as well as a 21 year old, which has deeply shocked the local community.

The incident occurred shortly before 6:00 p.m. at an establishment in the northern part of the city. According to the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Department (SJSD), the attack may have been a “targeted” attack, which has led investigators to look into possible links to prior criminal activity or conflicts between local groups. Authorities are still searching for one or more suspects who may have been involved in the shooting.

A children’s party that ended in tragedy

The family celebration was interrupted when gunshots were fired, causing panic inside the restaurant.

Parents and children took shelter as best they could while the assistants tried to flee or protect the children.

Witnesses have described scenes of total confusion, with people trying to help the injured while waiting for emergency services to arrive.

Of the 15 injured, at least one remains in critical condition, according to the official report.

Paramedics and first responders transported several victims to nearby hospitals, including minors who received immediate attention due to the severity of their injuries.

Gang violence, the main line

Stockton Mayor Christina Fugazi told KCRA 3 that the shooting was linked to gang violence, a persistent problem in some areas of the county.

Although no arrests have been confirmed, this line of investigation is currently the strongest for the authorities.

For his part, Patrick Withrow, head of the SJSD, reported that firearms were found in the ceiling of the room where the shooting occurred.

However, it is still unclear whether any of these weapons were used during the attack.

Investigators are analyzing videos from security cameras, testimonies from attendees and other evidence recovered at the scene.

Mayor Fugazi also confirmed that she requested assistance from President Donald Trump’s administration to strengthen the investigation and expedite the necessary resources.

Federal support could include FBI assistance, ballistics analysis and collaboration with agencies specializing in violent crime.

A community hit by violence

What happened in Stockton is once again setting off alarm bells in a community that, until last week, had recorded a decrease in homicides: 34 murders, compared to 46 for the same period in 2024.

However, this attack – given its nature and the ages of the victims – has generated a much deeper emotional impact among residents and authorities.

Stockton, a city with a significant Latino population, has been working on community programs to reduce youth violence and increase the presence of social resources.

Local leaders fear that this incident could destabilize these developments and increase tension in neighborhoods already facing social inequalities.

Authorities will continue to search for those responsible in the coming hours.

More details are expected to be released as ballistic analysis and witness interviews progress.

Police are asking the community to provide any relevant information that may help shed light on the case.
