A shooting that occurred this Sunday, July 13, shook the city of Lexington, the second most populated city in the state of Kentucky, leaving three people dead, including the attacker, and at least three wounded.

The incident began in the vicinity of the Blue Grass Airport and culminated at the Richmond Road Baptist Church, state and local authorities confirmed.

According to Lexington Police Chief Lawrence Weathers, the shooting began on Terminal Drive, which borders the Blue Grass Regional Airport.

There, the suspect fired shots at a Kentucky State Police trooper.

The attack occurred outside the air terminal, so the airport’s internal operations were not affected.

The wounded officer was immediately transported to a nearby hospital, where he continues to receive medical attention.

After the first shooting, the suspect fled the scene and drove to Richmond Road Baptist Church, located about 15 minutes from the airport.

Once there, he entered the temple and opened fire again.

As a result, two women who were at the scene lost their lives, and two other men were injured.

Authorities managed to intercept the shooter at the scene and confirmed that he was killed in the confrontation.

At a press conference, Chief Weathers explained that the identity of the attacker has not yet been publicly revealed.

But he did indicate that “he may have had a connection with people who were inside the church.”

This information could suggest a personal or family motive behind the shooting, although the investigation remains active.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear expressed his regret on social media:

“It breaks my heart to share that the shooting in Lexington at Richmond Road Baptist Church has claimed the lives of people.

“Others injured, including a Kentucky State Police officer, are receiving care at a nearby hospital.

“They have also killed the shooter,” the governor confirmed.

Beshear added that “violence like this has no place in our region or country,” stressing the need to address the root of the problem with effective prevention measures.

This new shooting adds to a growing list of gun violence in the United States.

According to Gun Violence Archive, an independent organization that monitors gun violence in the country, at least 229 mass shootings have been recorded so far in 2025.

This classification applies to incidents where four or more people are shot, excluding the assailant.

The attack in Lexington is a reminder of the vulnerability of places that, like churches and public spaces, should represent safety and community.

In this context, many residents – including the Hispanic community – live with the constant worry of being involved in these types of events.

The events also come just two weeks after another tragic incident in Idaho, where two firefighters and a shooter were killed during a shootout in the middle of a wildfire, leading to FBI intervention.

What can Hispanic residents do?

For Hispanics living in the U.S., these events reiterate the importance of being informed and prepared.

Some key recommendations:

Pay attention to the emergency protocols of your city or workplace.

If you attend public places such as churches, community centers or schools, familiarize yourself with evacuation routes.

Participate in neighborhood forums or community activities where safety issues are discussed.

The case remains under investigation and authorities are expected to reveal more details in the coming hours.

The Lexington community remains in mourning for the victims, and local authorities have asked for respect and privacy for the affected families.
