Chantal made landfall in South Carolina on Sunday, July 6, with sustained winds of up to 60 miles per hour (about 97 km/h). Its effects were felt most strongly in North Carolina early Monday morning, where it caused rivers to overflow, road blockages and emergency evacuations.

Chantal is the third Atlantic tropical storm in 2025, following Andrea and Barry, but the first to make landfall in the United States.

At the moment, its remnants are circulating as low pressure, although they continue to cause rain in sectors of the eastern part of the country.

Its impact coincided with a critical situation in Texas, where more than 90 people died in Kerr County over the weekend as the Guadalupe River flooded, in one of the worst natural disasters in the state’s recent history.
