The death of journalist and writer Ernestina Sodi -occurring in November 2024- has brought with it not only the natural mourning of her loved ones, but also a family conflict that, according to several media, pits singer Thalía against her niece, actress Camila Sodi.

The reason? Thalía’s apparent intention to move her sister’s ashes to New York, a decision that was firmly rejected by Camila.

Ernestina Sodi was emergency hospitalized on October 21, 2024 in Mexico City after suffering a heart attack.

Despite medical efforts, a second infarction caused the rupture of the aorta artery, a serious complication that kept her in intensive care for more than 20 days.

In the early morning of November 9, Camila Sodi publicly confirmed the death of her mother.

According to journalist Gustavo Adolfo Infante, Ernestina had signed an advance directive indicating that she did not wish to be resuscitated if she suffered another cardiopulmonary arrest.

According to this information, Camila and her sister Marina Sodi signed the medical document supporting this decision.

The possible disagreement between Thalía and Camila Sodi

Although in the days following the death Thalía shared emotional messages about the loss of her sister, tensions have recently resurfaced between both branches of the family.

According to statements made by entertainment journalist Javier Ceriani, Thalía has expressed her desire to take the remains of Ernestina Sodi to New York, to place them next to those of her mother, Yolanda Miranda Mange, who died in 2011 and whose remains rest in New York.

Ceriani claims that the interpreter of “Amor a la Mexicana” would have argued that her mother would have wanted her daughters to be together also after her death.

“All my dead are going to be where I live,” the singer reportedly said, according to the journalist.

Camila says no

However, Camila Sodi is reportedly strongly opposed, stating that her mother should remain in Mexico, her native country and where she lived most of her life.

The actress also allegedly pointed out that Ernestina was her mother, and that this decision corresponded to her as her direct daughter.

In addition, it has been reported that Thalía took care of the funeral expenses and the medical process, which, for some, would explain her involvement in the decision making.

Even so, legally Camila would be directly responsible as the daughter and signer of the advance directive.

Grandmother’s testimony

Added to this conflict is a background revealed by Ceriani, who claimed to have interviewed Thalía and Camila’s maternal grandmother, in 2020, at the home of Laura Zapata, Thalía’s half-sister.

In that conversation – which was not aired on television – the grandmother expressed her dissatisfaction with Thalía’s decision years ago to take her mother’s remains to the United States:

“My dream was to have my daughter here, buried in this ground so I could cry to her and pray to her…and Thalía took her away forever.”

What’s next?

For now, none of the parties involved has issued an official statement regarding this disagreement, so what has been revealed remains in the realm of third-party versions.

However, the situation highlights how complicated it can be to manage family decisions after a loss, especially when there are deep affections, public figures and divided wills.

We will have to wait if Thalía or Camila Sodi make a statement and clarify the situation.

In the meantime, the issue continues to generate interest both for the human aspect and for the media dimension involving the Sodi family.
