Toronto signs Dylan Cease for $210 million

They strengthen the rotation with an elite arm

The Toronto Blue Jays signed right-handed starter Dylan Cease to a seven-season, $210 million contract, MLB.com announced Wednesday.

The Blue Jays, who lost in Game 7 of the last World Series to the Los Angeles Dodgers, have expressed their desire to strengthen their starting pitching, a mission they hope to accomplish with the addition of Dylan Cease.

The 29-year-old right-hander, who last season received a salary of $13.7 million, will receive an average income of $30 million with this new agreement with the Canadian team.

The Azulejos’ new starter was considered the second most relevant of the current free agent market in the Major Leagues.

Only behind Dominican left-hander Framber Valdez.

Last season with the San Diego Padres, Dylan Cease finished with an 8-12 record in 32 starts in which he completed 168 innings.

He scored 85 clean runs and accumulated a 4.55 ERA.

He struck out 215 batters, accumulating his fifth consecutive season of 200 or more strikeouts.

With the signing of Dylan Cease, who joins Kevin Gausman and Puerto Rican Jose Berrios, the Blue Jays have three of the six starters who have made 30 or more starts.

And completed 160 or more episodes in the last five seasons.

In addition to the durability he can provide from the mound, Dylan Cease provides great depth to Toronto’s starting rotation.

He plans to join Gausman, Cy Young Award winner Shane Bieber, rookie sensation Trey Yesavage and Puerto Rico’s Berrios.

In his career at MLB’s top level, Dylan Cease has started two games at Toronto’s Roger Centre.

In which he has a record of 1-1 and an effectiveness of 2.57, after completing 14 chapters of four runs and 13 strikeouts.

In his seven-year Major League career, in which he has worn the Chicago White Sox and Padres pennants, Cease has a 65-58 record and a 3.88 ERA in 188 starts.

He has 1,231 strikeouts in 1015.1 innings worked.

Dylan Cease has finished in the top four in Cy Young Award voting in the 2022 (second) and 2024 (fourth) seasons.

On both occasions he was ranked 22nd in the campaign’s Most Valuable Player election.
