Total operation: Portugal arrived in Cancun to play against El Tri

Portugal’s national soccer team arrived this Tuesday in Cancun, Quintana Roo, under a heavy security detail for the friendly match they will play against Mexico next Saturday, March 28.

The Portuguese delegation, guarded by members of the local police, had no contact with the media or fans as they left Cancun International Airport.

Led by Paris Saint-Germain’s Nuno Mendes and Vitinha, Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandez and Barcelona’s Joao Cancelo, the Portuguese team will be based at an exclusive hotel on the Riviera Maya.

This is to avoid suffering the effects of the altitude of 2,240 meters above sea level at the Azteca Stadium in the capital, where the match will be played.

The Portugal team will remain in the Mexican Caribbean until Friday, when it will travel to Mexico City.

On Saturday morning, the Azteca field will be reconnoitered and will be ready for the match against the local team.

The big absentee in Spain coach Roberto Martinez’s squad is Cristiano Ronaldo.

Portugal’s all-time leading scorer is recovering from a muscle strain.

Among the new players is Paulinho, a 33-year-old veteran striker from Toluca in Mexican soccer, who will join the team in the next few hours.

After facing Mexico, Portugal will travel to Atlanta (Georgia, USA).

There they will face the home team next Tuesday in their second warm-up match of this FIFA training camp.

The team coached by Roberto Martinez is part of group K in the World Cup, along with Uzbekistan, Colombia and an opponent to be defined.

The playoff between New Caledonia, Jamaica and the Democratic Republic of Congo, against which they will make their debut on June 17.
