U.S. President Donald Trump expressed his good wishes to his predecessor, Joe Biden, on Sunday, May 18, after learning that the Democrat was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer with bone metastasis.

“Melania and I are saddened to learn of Joe Biden’s recent medical diagnosis. We extend our best wishes to Jill and the family, and wish Joe a speedy and successful recovery,” Trump wrote on his official Truth Social account, his personal social network.

The message marks an unusually conciliatory tone in the relationship between the two politicians, historically characterized by strong antagonism since the 2020 presidential campaign.

Although Trump has been openly critical of Biden on multiple occasions, his public statement has been interpreted as a gesture of respect in the face of a human and sensitive issue.

Former President Joe Biden, 82, was diagnosed with prostate cancer after persistent urinary symptoms.

After undergoing a series of medical studies, a prostate nodule was detected, which turned out to be malignant.

According to the statement from his office, the type of cancer is considered aggressive (Gleason 9) and has already metastasized to the bones.

Despite the advanced stage of the disease, the medical team explained that the cancer is hormone-sensitive, allowing for potentially effective treatment options, such as hormone therapy, immunotherapy or targeted treatments.

The Biden family has begun medical consultations to define the most appropriate therapeutic path.

For the moment, no details have been given as to whether the former president will undergo chemotherapy, radiotherapy or any experimental treatment.

Joe Biden’s health has been the subject of scrutiny throughout his political career, and more intensely since he assumed the presidency in 2021.

In February 2023, during a routine medical check-up, a cancerous lesion in his chest was removed in a successful outpatient procedure.

The then presidential physician stated that no further treatment was necessary.

As early as 2024, before abandoning his campaign for re-election, a full physical concluded that Biden was “fit for duty.”

However, in July of that same year, the president decided to withdraw from the electoral race and cede the leadership of his party to his vice president, Kamala Harris, who eventually lost the general election to Donald Trump.

Reactions and political context

The news of the diagnosis has generated numerous expressions of support from figures of both parties.

Despite political differences, Republican leaders such as Nikki Haley and Chris Christie have also publicly expressed their solidarity with Biden and his family.

Trump, who has been a consistent critic of Biden’s age and ability, recently commented.

I know people over 90 years old who are perfectly healthy… but Joe isn't one of them

Still, his statement on Sunday marks a contrast to those comments, focusing exclusively on the health of his predecessor.

A battle that unites beyond politics

For many Americans, especially in the Hispanic community, where access to health care and early detection of cancer are sensitive issues, this case brings to the table the importance of regular checkups, timely treatment and family support.

Prostate cancer is one of the most common diseases among men over 65 years of age.

According to the American Cancer Society, 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with this disease during his lifetime, being more frequent in African-American and Latino men.

As the country watches Biden’s evolution closely, his diagnosis has become a reminder of the human side behind public figures.
