The United States decided Thursday to suspend the issuance of work visas to foreigners who aspire to work as commercial truck drivers on the grounds that they “endanger” the lives of citizens and the jobs of local truck drivers.

“The growing number of foreign drivers operating large tractor-trailer trucks on U.S. highways endangers American lives and undermines the livelihoods of American truckers,” Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on his X account in announcing the new measure.

Rubio did not provide statistics on accidents or foreign workers in this sector and added that the new measure will take effect immediately.

The move was announced just days after the arrest of Indian truck driver Harjinder Singh, who was charged with three counts of manslaughter following a U-turn accident in an unauthorized zone on a Florida highway last Saturday.

Supporters of Donald Trump’s government used the fact to criticize the opposition because the undocumented truck driver would have obtained his license in California, a state governed by Gavin Newson, the Democrat critical of the current U.S. president, who is emerging as an electoral rival for 2028.

In addition, the Trump Administration confirmed Thursday that it is checking more than 55 million people with valid U.S. visas for possible violations that could result in cancellation of the documents and deportation from the United States, EFE reported.
