This June 10, 2025, U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem publicly accused Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum of encouraging violent protests in Los Angeles against immigration raids. During a press conference at the White House alongside President Donald Trump, Noem stated:

“Claudia Sheinbaum went out and encouraged more protests in Los Angeles, and I condemn her for that. She should not be encouraging violent protests like the ones we are seeing.” These statements came amid demonstrations in Los Angeles following ICE operations that resulted in the detention of dozens of migrants, including 42 Mexicans.

President Sheinbaum quickly responded to the accusations through her X account (formerly Twitter), calling them “absolutely false.”

He accompanied his message with a video of his press conference the day before.

Here he condemned the violence in the protests and called on the Mexican community in the U.S. to demonstrate peacefully.

Sheinbaum emphasized: “We have always been against violent demonstrations, and even more so now from the high responsibility that I represent”.

He also reiterated his commitment to the defense of migrants’ rights.

He also advocated for comprehensive immigration reform that recognizes the role of Mexicans in the U.S. economy.

In response to the protests, President Trump ordered the deployment of 4,000 National Guard troops and 700 Marines to Los Angeles.

This without the consent of California Governor Gavin Newsom.

This action, unprecedented in decades, has been criticized by local authorities and activists.

They accuse the federal government of unnecessarily escalating the conflict and militarizing the response to the demonstrations.

The Pentagon estimated that this operation will cost at least $134 million, raising concerns in Congress about the use of resources to control civilian protests.

Implications

The Hispanic community in the U.S. is in a delicate situation.

The raids and the federal response have generated fear and uncertainty among migrants.

It is essential that community members know their rights and seek legal advice if they face immigration-related situations.

Community organizations and Mexican consulates are offering support and resources for those in need.

Migrants are advised to stay informed through official channels and avoid participating in acts of violence that may jeopardize their safety and immigration status.
