The wait is over and Mexico delivered. In a Minute Maid Park that felt like a branch of the national territory, the Mexican Baseball Team began its journey in the 2026 World Baseball Classic with a resounding 8-2 victory over Great Britain, making it clear that the hierarchy of the team led by Benjamin Gil is intact.
The one in charge of lighting the fuse was 22-year-old Nacho Álvarez. The Mexican shortstop wasted no time and, in the second inning, hit a solid home run against Jack Anderson’s pitches to put the first run on the board.

In the tournament‘s Group B game at Houston’s Minute Maid Park, Mexico took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning thanks to 22-year-old third baseman Nacho Alvarez, who hit a powerful long swing over the fence against starter Jack Anderson.
Great Britain threatened at the end of the fourth chapter due to the lack of control shown by Javier Assad, who gave Harry Ford a base on balls.
Although BJ Murray, next in the inning, was controlled with a grounder that culminated in a double play from four to three, left-hander Brennan Bernardino came on in relief to end the inning scoreless with a strikeout of Matt Koperniak.
In the fifth, Great Britain went back on the attack. Ian Lewis singled to first.
Benjamín Gil, Mexican trainer, sent Luis Gastelum to the mound, who was grounded out with a single by Thompson.
With men on the corners Jazz Chisholm hit a deep fly ball that Jarren Duran controlled to sing the third out and keep the lead on the board.
In the bottom of the sixth, pitcher Alex Carrillo, Gastelum’s replacement, was greeted with a full-length grounder from Harry Ford, which tied the game.
Mexico responded in the eighth thanks to the lack of control of Gary Gill Hill, who gave passports to Jarren Duran and Randy Arozarena, who left the table set for Jonathan Aranda, who homered against Tristan Beck, Hill’s reliever, to make the score 4-1.
The Mexican offense maintained its power in the ninth with a single by Alex Thomas that drove in Javier Serna and Nick Gonzales. Joey Ortiz drove in Thomas with an RBI single and Randy Arozrena drove in Ortiz to make it 8-1.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, Great Britain came within 8-2 against Andrés Muñoz, the Mexican ninth’s star closer.
