Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked the White House on Monday for the letter sent by U.S. First Lady Melania Trump to Russian President Vladimir Putin, advocating the reunification of Ukrainian children deported to Ukraine from its occupied territories.
“Many thanks to his wife, the first lady of the United States”, says Zelensky.
“She sent a letter to Putin about our children. My wife, the first lady of Ukraine, delivered that letter, not to you, but to your wife,” Zelenski said handing a thank-you missive to Trump, at the start of their meeting in Washington this Monday.
Trump responded by saying that “the first lady felt this very deeply. She has seen the same thing that you see, and what I see as well. It’s horrible.
“She (Melania Trump) loves children, she has a wonderful son who she probably loves more than anyone, even more than me – I hate to admit it.”
The U.S. president added that “it was a very beautiful letter” and that it was “well received” by Putin.
The first lady’s letter, which was delivered at the Trump-Putin bilateral summit on August 15, called for an end to the war for the sake of the future of children caught up in the conflict and appealed to the conscience of leaders who have the ability to make decisions.
In March 2023, the International Criminal Court(ICC) issued an arrest warrant for Putin for the crimes of forcible deportation and illegal transfer of Ukrainian children to Russian-occupied territories.
During the meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky, the president Donald Trump is also expected to convey the conditions proposed by Vladimir Putin to achieve peace at the Alaska meeting last Friday, including the cession of Ukrainian territory invaded by Russia, an option described as unacceptable by Kiev, EFE reported.
