Christmas celebrations were marked by sadness for Chayanne, who dressed in mourning at Christmas and publicly shared his grief after the death of Tony Ocasio, one of his partners in the youth group Los Chicos, with whom he took his first steps in music during the 80s.

Through his social networks, the Puerto Rican artist dedicated an emotional message to say goodbye to his childhood friend and colleague.

“How many trials, how many anecdotes. When we were children and everything seemed like a game. Your memory remains forever. Rest in peace,” Chayanne wrote on his Instagram account.

The artist accompanied the text with photographs of the time when four young people dreamed of conquering stages and ended up marking an entire generation.

Tony Ocasio was part of Los Chicos, a Puerto Rican group that also included Rey Díaz, José Miguel “Migue” Santa and Chayanne.

The group achieved great popularity in Puerto Rico and Latin America in the 80’s, becoming a phenomenon of youth music.

It was also a key platform for the later artistic development of Chayanne, today one of the most recognized figures in Latin music.

The images shared by the singer evoke those early years, when music was a youthful game that eventually turned into a professional career of international scope.

The news of the death and the reactions

Tony Ocasio’s death was announced on Christmas Eve by his sister Iraida, who shared a message on social networks to say goodbye to him.

“Your voice, your talent and your essence will live forever in our memories. Thank you for what you were and for what you left on this earth. Fly high, brother,” he wrote.

According to information published by El Nuevo Día, Tony Ocasio, 58, resided in Orlando, Florida.

The cause of death was reportedly a heart attack, although no further details were provided, out of respect for the family’s privacy at such a difficult time.

One more blow to the group’s history

This death represents a new loss for the history of Los Chicos.

In March 2019, José Miguel “Migue” Santa, another of the group’s members, also died of a massive heart attack, as reported at the time by the group’s former manager, Carlos Alfonso Ramírez.

Tony Ocasio’s departure reinforces the feeling of nostalgia among fans who grew up listening to the group’s music and who today remember that period as an important part of the Latin pop culture of the 1980s.

For many U.S. Hispanics, Chayanne’s reaction reflects not only the loss of a musical partner, but also the importance of the bonds formed in youth.

The artist ‘s message connects with an experience shared by many migrant families: looking back, honoring those who were part of the journey and recognizing that today’s success is also built on stories and people who are no longer with us.

With his message, Chayanne chose to remember Tony Ocasio with affection, gratitude and memory, emphasizing that, although life goes on, the memories of those who marked such an important stage remain forever.
