Argentine Ángel Correa, forward for Tigres UANL of Mexican soccer, said Friday that his country’s national team is one of the favorites to win the 2026 World Cup thanks to the presence of Lionel Messi.
“As long as Messi is on the pitch, Argentina will always be favorites; that’s clear for us,” the striker said.
Correa dreams of returning to the World Cup
Correa, who was part of the national team that lifted the World Cup in Qatar 2022, talked about how hard he is working to earn a place in Lionel Scaloni’s team.
“It is a reality that there is very little left for the World Cup.”
“I am fortunate to have participated in Qatar with that great squad; it was a unique and historic experience,” he recalled.
“In my head is always wanting to be back, but I am aware that there are many players and Scaloni has it very complicated.”
“But my job is to do well and always be ready to convince him,” added the Argentine attacker.
At the 2026 World Cup in Mexico, the United States and Canada, Argentina’s national team heads Group J, where it will face Algeria, Jordan and Austria.
Ruling out a move to Inter Miami
On the other hand, Correa ruled out that among his plans is to follow the path of his former colleague Germán Berterame.
He left Rayados de Monterrey to sign with Inter Miami of Major League Soccer, where he will be Messi’s teammate.
“No. They took away a great striker like Berterame, but I have a contract here at Tigres”.
“I am very happy and grateful with this team, with the way they opened the doors to me and my family.”

Correa also commented on the difficulties Tigres has faced in recovering in the local league.

“We had no preseason after the final against Toluca, which was something that hurt us a lot.”
“In the first games of this tournament it was noticeable that we lacked rhythm, but we are back to compete and add up, the goal is to return to the final,” he concluded.
