This Monday, Texas Republican Representative Tony Gonzales announced his immediate resignation from the U.S. Congress. But behind his departure is not a simple political disagreement, but a story of alleged harassment and a fatal outcome that has left everyone with their hearts in their hands.

The pressure became unbearable for Gonzales after the release of a series of explosive text messages. According to attorneys for the family of a former staffer in his office, these messages document a coercive and sexual relationship initiated by the congressman in 2024. What makes this case infinitely more painful is that the staffer involved took her own life shortly thereafter, a fact that The New York Times put under the national spotlight.

Texas Republican Rep. Tony Gonzales announced his resignation from the U.S. Congress amid mounting bipartisan pressure after he was accused of having a coercive relationship with a female staffer in his office who subsequently committed suicide, The New York Times reported.

“There is a time for everything and God has a plan for each of us. When Congress resumes its sessions tomorrow, I will submit my request for retirement,” Gonzales wrote on his official X account.

The legislator, who is serving his third term and represents a border district between San Antonio and El Paso, will resign after the publication of text messages that, according to the attorney for the family of one of his female employees, document an attempted sexual relationship between the congressman and the female worker in 2024, facts that have generated intense political scrutiny.

The case, revealed in early March, has provoked reactions in both parties and has reignited the debate on the conduct of legislators and internal oversight mechanisms in Congress, in a context of growing pressure to clarify the circumstances surrounding the case.

Gonzales was the second congressman to resign on Monday, after Democrat Eric Swalwell announced he would leave his California seat, following allegations by several women of sexual assault and misconduct, which also forced him to decline his aspirations to become governor of the Golden State.

Swalwell, who had been in the U.S. Congress since 2013, announced his resignation in a statement posted on his X account, in which he defended himself and denied the allegations.
