The National Football League (NFL) announced Friday that the salary cap for each of its 32 teams in the 2026 season will be $301.2 million, a record in league history.

This represents a $22 million increase over last year and the first time the league has exceeded $300 million in salary cap, something that was implemented in the 1994 season to ensure financial balance among teams.

In that ’94 NFL campaign, the first salary cap was set at $34.60 million; a decade later the amount grew to $80.5 million.

In 2014 the limit was set at $133 million, an amount that for the 2024 season reached $255.4 million; last year it stood at $279.2.

Also this Friday, the NFL established the values that the contracts of its elements with ‘franchise player’ tags will reach.

A designation that allows a team to retain for one more year a player who is close to becoming a free agent before offering him a long-term, multi-million dollar contract.

The quarterback position is the highest value for the franchise player tag at $43.89 million for one year.

In the next step are the recipients with this designation who should receive $27.29 million for one year.

The amount George Pickens is seeking, given the Dallas Cowboys ‘ inability to offer him a multi-year deal at this time.

Among the tight ends who will be under this modality is Kyle Pitts of the Atlanta Falcons, who will be obligated to pay him $15.04 million according to the tabulator.

The amounts per position are completed by the 14.29 million corresponding to the brokers.

25.77 for offensive linemen and 27.12 for defensive tackles; defensive wings will receive a $24.43 million contract.

Linebackers will reach 26.86; cornerbacks, 21.16; deep defensive backs, 20.14; and kickers with this tag will receive $6.64 million for one year.
