The war in the Middle East continues to take a heavy toll on the US military. This Sunday, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed the death of a soldier who had been seriously wounded during the first strikes launched by Iran in Saudi Arabia on March 1.

With this death, there are now seven active duty service members who have been killed in action since the beginning of the so-called “Operation Epic Fury”. The identity of the soldier is being withheld for 24 hours to notify his next of kin, but his death comes at a time of heightened political sensitivity.

A U.S. soldier died after being wounded in Saudi Arabia in one of Iran’s first attacks in the war, bringing the total number of American fatalities to seven, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) reported Sunday.

The Florida-based agency revealed in a statement that the serviceman died Saturday night “from wounds received during initial attacks by the Iranian regime across the Middle East” after being “seriously injured” in an attack on U.S. troops in Saudi Arabia on March 1.

“This is the seventh active duty service member to be killed in action during Operation Epic Fury. Major combat operations continue,” CENTCOM stated.

The identity of the “deceased serviceman” will not be revealed within 24 hours, pending identification of the deceased by family members.

The death is revealed just days after the arrival in the US of the bodies of six soldiers killed in Kuwait by Iran’s drone strike, prompting US President Donald Trump to lead the ceremony for the dignified transfer of the bodies and pledging to “keep American deaths to a minimum.”

“They are great heroes of our country and we are going to keep it that way. When it comes to war, there are always those (casualties), we’re going to keep it to a minimum,” the president said in Miami before the tribute.

Trump also assured on Saturday that he would only send U.S. troops on the ground for “a very good reason,” although Axios media reported Sunday that the United States and Israel are analyzing sending special troops to Iran to confiscate its stockpile of enriched uranium.
