On April 13, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame unveiled the official list of artists who will be part of its 2026 generation. As every year, the selection gathers figures whose trajectory has marked a before and after in the history of music, recognizing not only their commercial success, but also their cultural influence at a global level.

Expectations were high, especially due to the diversity of genders and generations represented among the nominees, which made this edition one of the most talked about in recent years.

Among the names that stood out as candidates were Shakirawho was competing with 16 other artists for a place in this exclusive venue. Despite having a consolidated career of more than two decades and a huge fan base, the Colombian artist did not manage to secure her entry on this occasion.

In the public voting, Shakira reached fifth place, which evidenced a significant support from her fans. However, the process also includes the decision of more than 1,200 specialized voters, including historians, musicians and industry figures, which ended up tipping the scales towards other candidates.

Finally, eight artists were selected for induction into the Hall of Fame, all of them with influential careers and styles that have left their mark in different genres. The list includes:

  • Billy Idol
  • Iron Maiden
  • Joy Division / New Order
  • Oasis
  • Sade
  • Luther Vandross
  • Wu-Tang Clan

This group reflects the diversity of the music scene, ranging from classic rock and punk to soul and hip hop.

Recognition of early influence

In addition to the principal artists, the Hall of Fame also presented the Early Influence Award, a category that recognizes figures whose work laid the groundwork for later generations.

In this edition, it is worth mentioning the inclusion of Celia CruzCelia Cruz, an undisputed icon of Latin music, whose legacy continues to live on worldwide. Along with her, the following were also recognized Fela Kuti, Gram Parsonswere also recognized, as well as living artists Queen Latifah y MC Lyte.

The 2026 generation of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame leaves mixed feelings. On the one hand, it celebrates great figures who have defined the course of music for decades; on the other hand, it generates debate due to absences, such as Shakira, who for many deserved a place on this list.

Even so, the recognition of artists from different backgrounds and styles confirms the constant evolution of the music industry and the openness to new narratives within this prestigious venue.
