Business slows down high-level duels

Mexican-American fighter of Ecuadorian descent, David Benavidez, known as “The Mexican Monster,” once again demonstrated his confidence and hunger for greatness by responding to recent comments from undisputed super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

In a recent interview with analyst Mystic Zach for The Fight Guys, Benavidez (30-0, 27 KO’s) defended his position as one of the most dangerous fighters on the planet. His statements came after Canelo dismissed a possible fight against him, asserting that Benavidez is not a world champion and does not represent a commercial attraction. “I’m the most dangerous fighter in the world, but also the one they pay the least for. That’s why they avoid me,” Benavidez claimed. “Everyone in boxing thinks about the business, not the legacy. And that’s what frustrates me.”

Why does Canelo avoid it?

Canelo Alvarez (60-2-2, 39 KO’s), the current undisputed 168-pound champion, has been criticized by many fans and pundits for not accepting a fight against Dvaid Benavidez, who is the most legitimate challenger in the division.

Although Alvarez will face Terence Crawford in September 2025 – a high-profile fight – many feel his most natural fight would be against David Benavidez, who is a natural super middleweight and younger.

David was quick to point out that difference, “Crawford is a great fighter, but he comes from 147 pounds.”

A fight between Canelo and me would be a war of power, stamina and real excitement for the fans

At only 28 years old, David Benavidez remains one of the most complete boxers of the moment.

In June 2024, he soundly defeated Oleksandr Gvozdyk to be crowned WBC interim light heavyweight champion.

This demonstrates their ability to compete in multiple divisions.

Now, he is aiming to face Artur Beterbiev or Dmitry Bivol in 2025 if the Canelo fight does not materialize.

“Not being mentioned motivates me. They ignore me because they know what I am capable of doing,” concluded David Benavidez.

Meanwhile, Hispanic fans in the U.S. are eagerly waiting to see their representative get the opportunity he deserves: a one-on-one duel with the most famous fighter in boxing today.
