Over 220,000 Homes Lose Power as Texas Storms Hit on Memorial Day

More storms are expected this week

This Monday, May 26, 2025, severe thunderstorms hit Texas over the Memorial Day holiday, leaving more than 220,000 homes without power. The hardest hit areas included the Houston metropolitan area and Montgomery, Jefferson and Trinity counties.

In Houston, CenterPoint Energy reported that approximately 167,000 customers lost electric service, while Entergy reported more than 31,000 outages in Montgomery and Jefferson.

The storms that hit Texas, with winds up to 70 mph, caused downed trees and power lines, as well as structural damage.

In Harris County, a tree fell on a house, and in The Woodlands, lightning caused a fire in the attic of a home.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Power companies deployed additional crews to expedite service restoration.

CenterPoint Energy mobilized crews as early as midnight Monday, and Entergy prepositioned 300 linemen ahead of the storm.

Most services are expected to be restored by Tuesday night.

Although some areas may experience outages through Wednesday.

The National Weather Service issued flood watches and severe storm warnings for several regions of Texas.

In San Antonio, thunderstorms with large hail and possible tornadoes are anticipated between Tuesday afternoon and early Wednesday morning.

Prepare an emergency kit: Include flashlights, batteries, water and non-perishable food.

Avoid flooded areas: Do not attempt to cross flooded streets.
