During the filming of the fifth season of Emily in Paris, the production was shaken by a tragedy.
Last August 21, 2025, assistant director Diego Borella, 47, suddenly collapsed while preparing for the final shot of the day at the historic Hotel Danieli in Venice.
Despite the use of a defibrillator by medical personnel and the arrival of local emergency services, he died at approximately 7:30 p.m., the victim of a presumed fulminant heart attack.
Faced with the emotional impact, the production stopped filming immediately.
However, just two days later, on August 23, filming resumed as a sign of professionalism and continuity of medium, under strict measures to honor Borella’s memory.
Born in Venice, Diego Borella had forged a solid career after training in Rome, London and New York. His career included outstanding work in film and television, such as the Italian series DOC – Nelle tue mani.
He was also passionate about the visual arts and literature: poet, children’s story writer and author of the haiku book 5. 7. 5. – Haiku for a Year published in 2023.
Tragedy at Emily in Paris

Paramount Television Studios, which is in charge of the series, expressed through a spokesperson that it is “deeply saddened by the sudden departure of a member of the Emily in Parisproduction family” and extended its condolences to her family.
For his part, Venice’s Councillor for Tourism described the news as a painful moment and lamented the loss of such an esteemed local professional. Colleagues and friends, such as filmmaker Mattia Berto, remembered him as an “elegant guy, with brilliant talent and great irony”.
For the U.S. Hispanic community that closely follows the Emily in Paris universe, this loss represents much more than the passing of a member of the technical team.
It is a reminder of the talent behind the scenes and the emotional toll that international productions take. At the same time, it underscores the resilience of a team that, even in pain, decides to continue the story that has connected millions.
