International authorities made an important breakthrough this August: Josimar Cabrera Cornejo, investigated as the main suspect in the murder of Peruvian woman Sheylla Gutiérrez, turned himself in to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office following the issuance of an international arrest warrant.
This key step comes after her body was found in the Angeles National Forest, California.
Delivery and legal processes

Josimar Cabrera arrived in Lima on August 16, accompanied by his three children, after traveling from the U.S. via Mexico.
It was immediately intervened by the Peruvian National Police (PNP) at Jorge Chávez airport, in an operation with diplomatic support to safeguard the minors.
However, since there was no arrest warrant in force in Peru, he was released hours later.
Since then, his whereabouts were unknown until he decided to turn himself in to the U.S. justice system.
Key evidence and outrage

Several security cameras captured Josimar Cabrera dragging a bundle wrapped in sheets on the day Sheylla disappeared, evidence that is now central to the investigation.
In addition, a history of violence-such as an assault and threats complaint in 2017, and a 2012 arrest for weapons and drugs-fuels public outrage.

The family demands justice and criticizes the fact that Josimar Cabrera has remained free despite suspicions and evidence.
They also pointed out possible protections due to family ties with prison authorities.
Jurisdiction and Extradition Expectations

Los Angeles County authorities formally filed homicide charges.
In addition, they are working to have Josimar Cabrera extradited from Peru and brought to justice in the U.S.
Meanwhile, in the U.S., the case continues with the Attorney General’s Office leading the investigations.
In Peru, the Foreign Ministry and the Ministry of Women’s Affairs are coordinating with family members to repatriate the body and ensure psychological care for the children.
