The new film written and directed by Mexican director Michel Franco, ‘Dreams’, focuses, through a romance, on political relations between Mexico and the United States, with a focus on immigration policies, amid bilateral tensions following Donald Trump’s return to Washington.
“I was obsessed with making a film that talked about the relationship between the two countries, but from an intimate relationship (…) What interested me about the relationship between the two countries is that we need each other very much and that things are not always fair: power or the balance of power, as reflected in the relationship of these two characters, is changing and taking turns, sometimes expected and sometimes surprising,” Franco explained during a press conference on Tuesday in Mexico City.
The feature film, to be released in theaters on September 11, tells the love story of Jennifer and Fernando, a young Mexican ballet dancer, played by Isaac Hernandez, who leaves everything behind to pursue his dream of becoming an artist in the U.S. with his lover, played by American Jessica Chastain, although influences, power and social class complicate their relationship.
For her part, actress Jessica Chastain (California, 1977), of films such as ‘Interstellar’ (2014) or ‘Mars’ (2015), expressed that this film had made her step out of her comfort zone.

“I’ve always been incredibly political my whole career. I see my work as a political act (…). I’m trying to create questions for society, that we look at ourselves, look at how women are perceived in society, and question whether we are part of the problem or part of the solution or whether we are in a healthy relationship,” she said.
Along with Chastain, Isaac Hernández (Guadalajara, 1990), a Mexican ballet dancer of international stature, makes his leap to the big screen starring in this film after being part of the cast of the Spanish-Mexican miniseries ‘Alguien tiene que morir’ (Someone has to die).
Franco explained that, after meeting the dancer, his “instinct” led him to trust him and modify the original script so that Hernández would play the role of Fernando.
“We are the people who come from outside to work, the ones who have made the economy, the culture and the country in general so rich,” concluded the director of ‘Memory’ (2023), ‘Sundown’ (2021) or ‘New Order’ (2020).
The one-and-a-half-hour love story had its international premiere at the Berlin Film Festival and will hit theaters on Thursday, September 11, reported Agencia EFE.
