Air India plane crash: at least 294 passengers die, 1 survivor reported

On June 12, 2025, Air India Flight AI171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner bound for London Gatwick, crashed shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad, India.

On board were 242 people, including 230 passengers and 12 crew members. The aircraft reached a maximum altitude of approximately 625 feet before losing altitude and crashing in the residential area of Meghani Nagar, partially impacting the dining hall of B.J. Medical College.

The crash resulted in at least 294 fatalities, including ground casualties, and became the deadliest air disaster in India in nearly three decades.

Ramesh, who occupied seat 11A, managed to escape from the burning fuselage after impact.

According to accounts, he sustained injuries to his chest, eyes and feet, but was conscious and was taken to Asarwa Civil Hospital for medical attention.

Speaking from his hospital bed, Ramesh described the moments leading up to the crash: “Thirty seconds after takeoff, there was a loud noise and then the plane crashed. It all happened very fast.”

Sadly, his brother, who accompanied him on the flight, was among the deceased.

Indian authorities quickly deployed emergency teams, including army personnel and medical services, to address the situation.
