Washington Capitals legendary forward Alex Ovechkin has achieved what for decades seemed unattainable: breaking the all-time NHL scoring record, which belonged to Wayne Gretzky with 894 goals. The historic goal came on April 6, 2025 against the New York Islanders, marking the 895th of his career.
Alex Ovechkin began the 2024-25 season with 853 goals. With an impressive offensive run down the stretch of the campaign, the Russian scored his 42nd goal of the season to set the new all-time record. This achievement not only solidifies his legacy, but also transforms the conversation about who is the greatest goal scorer of all time.
Pursuit of records

Since March, Alex Ovechkin had accelerated his pace.
Between April 1 and April 6, he scored seven goals in five games against teams such as Boston, Carolina and Chicago.
The 894th goal came on April 4, also against the Blackhawks, matching Gretzky’s mark with a powerful shot on the power play.
The Great One himself was watching from the stands.
Two days later, at Washington’s Capital One Arena, Alex Ovechkin scored 895.
He did it with a direct shot after a pass from John Carlson, setting off the euphoria of the crowd and his teammates.
“I never imagined this was possible when I came into the league,” the captain said after the game.
