Javier Chicharito Hernández’s long-awaited return to Club Deportivo Guadalajara has not been the glorious ending that many Mexican fans anticipated. So far in the Apertura 2025, the Mexican National Team’s historic striker has had limited participation due to constant injuries and a discreet performance, far below the expectations generated after his departure from the LA Galaxy.

At 37 years of age, Chicharito Hernández has played just four games for Chivas since his return in February, and has not scored a goal in the current campaign. His physical condition has been the subject of concern, even within the coaching staff, which has opted to give him extended rest in several key matches of the tournament.

In light of this situation, former coach Ricardo “Tuca” Ferretti – a voice of authority in Mexican soccer – offered a blunt reflection during a recent broadcast of Futbol Picante (ESPN):

He should leave soccer, not let soccer leave him

Ferretti stressed that Chicharito Hernandez should value his legacy and seriously consider retirement before his image as a national idol deteriorates.

“Because of so many injuries and his current low level, following could affect the public’s perception of him. He was a great player. Let’s not lose that,” he added.

An epoch-making legacy

Javier Chicharito Hernández is the all-time leading scorer for the Mexican National Team (with 52 goals).

His time at clubs such as Manchester United, Real Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen and West Ham left an indelible mark on the memories of millions of fans.

His return to Chivas was seen as the perfect opportunity to close the cycle at home, but the physical reality is very different.

Chicharito Hernández has not responded directly to Ferretti’s comments, but he did acknowledge that his adaptation has been more difficult than he expected.

In recent interviews, he has stated that he remains committed to the team, although he has not ruled out a major decision on his future at the end of the tournament.

The fans, divided

In social networks, many fans ask for patience and consider that his presence alone is motivational for the young players in the squad.

Others, however, believe that the time has come to make way for a fresher generation and remember that Chivas needs immediate results to qualify for the Liguilla.

The truth is that, with the tournament progressing and his physical condition diminished, the end of Chicharito Hernandez’s career could be closer than expected.

Should he decide to retire, he would do so as one of the most influential Mexican soccer players of the 21st century.
