The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, expressed her deep sorrow for the death of Pope Francis, who passed away this Monday at the Vatican at the age of 88.

Sheinbaum sends condolences for Pope Francis

Through her official account on the social network X (formerly Twitter), Sheinbaum wrote.
“Pope Francis dies. A humanist who opted for the poor, peace and equality.
“He leaves a great legacy of true love of neighbor.
“For Catholics and non-Catholics alike, it is a great loss.
“To have known him was a great honor and privilege. May he rest in peace,” concluded the message from the Mexican president.
This message reflects the admiration that the Mexican president has expressed on several occasions towards the Argentine pontiff, highlighting his commitment to the neediest and his work for social justice.
A significant meeting at the Vatican
In February 2024, when she was still a presidential candidate, Sheinbaum had the opportunity to meet with Pope Francis in a private audience at Casa Santa Marta, the pontiff’s official residence in the Vatican.
For about an hour, the two discussed issues of common interest, such as social inclusion and equality.
At the end of the meeting, Sheinbaum shared on her social networks.
“It was an exceptional hour that I will never forget, with a simple and warm way that shows his greatness.
“I brought him some beautiful pieces of the Wixárika people as a gift.”
She also highlighted one of the Pope’s phrases that has inspired her the most.
“The only lawful way to look up and down at some person is when you shake their hand to raise it.”

Claudia Sheinbaum
Sheinbaum has on multiple occasions praised Pope Francis’ progressive vision, especially as it relates to the inclusion of women in leadership roles within the Catholic Church.
In February 2025, he highlighted the appointment of the nun Raffaella Petrini as the first woman to assume the position of “governor” of the Vatican, considering it a significant advance in gender equality.
Likewise, during the pontiff’s convalescence from bilateral pneumonia, Sheinbaum expressed her wishes for a speedy recovery, describing him as a “great humanist who has opted for the poorest and for promoting fraternity among people and among nations.”
A legacy that transcends borders
Pope Francis, the first Latin American pontiff, will be remembered for his focus on humility, compassion and advocacy for the most vulnerable.
His leadership has left an indelible mark on the Catholic Church and the international community.
For the Hispanic community in the United States, Pope Francis was a bridge between cultures and a voice for the rights of migrants and the disadvantaged.
His legacy will continue to inspire millions around the world.
