The NBA announced a disciplinary sanction against Sacramento Kings point guard Dennis Schröder following an altercation with Luka Doncic that occurred after the game against the Los Angeles Lakers on Dec. 28 at Crypto.com Arena.

According to the league, Dennis Schröder was suspended for three games after “confronting” and attempting to assault Doncic following Sacramento’s 125-101 loss. The incident drew attention not only because of the tension between the two players during the game, but also because the conflict escalated off the court, at a time when there is normally no direct competitive exchange.

The phrase that ignited everything

During the game, Luka Doncic and Dennis Schröder clashed on several occasions.

In one of the most talked-about moments, during a timeout, Doncic verbally provoked Schröder with a phrase referring to a contractual decision by the German player.

As recounted in the report, Doncic told him that he “should have signed that contract,” alluding to an extension that Schröder turned down in the past.

Although it seemed that the conflict had calmed down after the final horn, the tension reappeared minutes later.

Dennis Schröder came out of the visiting locker room and, seeing Doncic, gave himself another crossover in the tunnel in front of the home bench.

Approximately 40 minutes after the end of the game, Schröder again approached Doncic.

He told him that he could not talk to him that way on the court.

And then act as if nothing happened outside of it.

The NBA concluded that Dennis Schröder attempted to assault Doncic in that second confrontation.

At the time of the altercation, Lakers center Deandre Ayton stepped in to separate Schröder.

While Doncic tried to move away from the conflict and security personnel also entered to control the situation.

The report adds that Dennis Schröder ended up being escorted to the team bus, while Kings coach Doug Christie and several teammates tried to understand what happened.
