Former Republican Congressman George Santos of New York was sentenced to seven years in prison after pleading guilty to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. The sentence, handed down Friday, April 25, 2025, in federal court in the Eastern District of New York, marks the outcome of one of the most talked-about political scandals in recent years in the United States.

In addition to the prison sentence, George Santos must reimburse $373,749.97 to victims affected by his actions, as set forth in his plea agreement reached with the U.S. Attorney’s Office in August 2024. George Santos, 35, served less than a year in Congress before he was ousted last December following a bipartisan vote prompted by multiple allegations of his illegal and deceptive conduct.
