With the announcement of the second and final season of ‘Como agua para chocolate’ that will premiere on February 15, 2026, HBO Max presented this Tuesday its big bets for Mexico and Latin America.
The series, based on the novel by Mexican writer Laura Esquivel, is one of 43 original titles produced by Warner Bros. Discovery’s platform in the region, where it is also working on “more than 50 titles that are in different stages of development and production,” said the company’s entertainment content and programming strategy leader Mariano César.
The Upfront 2026 meeting was attended by actress Irene Azuela (Elena) and cinematographer Ximena Amann of this series produced by Salma Hayek, who emphasized that part of the success of this series nationally and internationally was due to its ability to “connect with today’s world”.
“We talk about gender identity, freedom, new femininities, spaces that have historically been assigned to women, such as the kitchen, but this kitchen becomes a place of love and freedom: that connects us very much with all audiences,” Amann emphasized.
He also pointed out that this last season shows the complete maturation of these characters, considered a legacy of the country’s literature and of the Spanish language.
Among the novelties was the biographical drama about Roberto Gómez Bolaños in ‘Chespirito: Sin querer queriendo’, which since its premiere in July to date has become the most successful production in the region and the one that has attracted the most new users.
Therefore, HBO Max will expand its universe with new projects such as the animated series ‘Los Colorado’, based on the character of ‘Chapulín Colorado’, in collaboration with Cartoon Network, as well as a live-action comedy based on the figure of ‘Don Ramón’.
César explained that these “new productions” are the result of a recent agreement between HBO Max and THR3 Media Group, the main partner of Grupo Chespirito, with the objective of enhancing Gómez Bolaños’ media universe.
HBO Max: Novelas and docuseries

Another of the U.S. platform’s bets for the region are docuseries, since titles such as ‘Marcial Maciel: El lobo de Dios’ or ‘Culiacanazo: Herederos del narco’ were the most watched documentaries in Latin America.
For 2026, HBO Max will continue its commitment to ‘true crime’ and will premiere series such as ‘Poeta caníbal’, based on the story of Mexico City serial killer José Luis Calva Zepeda.
It will also premiere ‘Los asesinos de Colosio’, a documentary that will investigate the assassination of former presidential candidate Luis Donaldo Colosio (1950-1994) and ‘Tragedia en la Corregidora’, another documentary about the riot that took place on March 5, 2022 during a Liga MX match between the soccer teams Querétaro and Atlas in which 26 people were injured.
In its exploration of the telenovela, an acclaimed format in Mexico, ‘Colisión’, the first Mexican fiction in this genre, will premiere during the second half of 2026, starring Macarena Achaga and portraying the relationship of two women who seek to make their way in the business world.
This year, according to Agencia EFE, HBO Max will continue to be the streaming platform on which the Mexican public can access European soccer, with live broadcasts of the Champions League and some matches from English competitions such as the Premier League and the FA Cup.
