The oral trial against the seven health professionals accused of the death of Diego Armando Maradona was declared null and void on May 29, 2025. This decision was made by judges Maximiliano Savarino and Verónica Di Tomasso, after the recusal of judge Julieta Makintach, who was accused of participating in a documentary on the same trial she was to judge.
According to the court ruling, Makintach’s intervention “violated the right of the parties to be judged by an impartial tribunal”. The images in the trailer of the documentary, where she is seen parading through courts with background music and dramatized scenes in her home, led to her dismissal and the total annulment of the trial.
More than 20 hearings

The trial for Maradona’s death had begun on March 11, 2025 and was already in its 21st hearing.
More than 40 witnesses had testified, including the ex-football player’s daughters: Dalma, Gianinna and Jana Maradona.
The process was focused on determining whether there was medical negligence during the home hospitalization of the Argentine idol.
Maradona passed away on November 25, 2020 in Tigre, a suburb of Buenos Aires.
The defendants were psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov, neurosurgeon Leopoldo Luque and psychologist Carlos Díaz.
As well as Dr. Nancy Forlini, nurse Ricardo Almirón, head nurse Mariano Perroni, and the medical coordinator of the operation.
Possible trial in 2026

With the nullity decreed, the Argentine Justice will have to designate a new court through a drawing of lots, a process that could take several months.
This implies that the trial would resume only in 2026, further lengthening the wait for justice by the Maradona family and society in general for his death.
More tna 40 witnesses had given testimony
The decision generated uneasiness among the ex-player’s relatives, who consider that the process was tainted by the imprudence of a magistrate who did not know how to separate her judicial role from her media exposure.
In the meantime, the defendants remain linked to the case, although without a date for the resumption of the trial.
Impact

The Maradona case continues to be of profound interest to the Hispanic community in the United States, where millions of soccer fans revere the Argentine star as a cultural and sports legend.
Frustration with the slowness of the judicial process and now its nullity reflects a pattern of impunity that many find troubling.
