Fox announced Tuesday that it ordered 12 episodes of a new version of ‘Baywatch,’ the iconic series about lifeguards at sea, scheduled to premiere for the 2026-2027 television season.

According to Variety, Fox Entertainment and Fremantle are co-producing the new version with producer, writer and director Matt Nix (‘Burn Notice’).

Greg Bonann, Doug Schwartz and Michael Berk, original creators of the 1989 series, will join the project as executive producers alongside Nix and Dante Di Loreto.

“In its first season, ‘Baywatch’ defined an entire era in beach life and elevated lifeguards to iconic status. Now, with our partners in Fremantle, this television juggernaut is poised for a modern comeback,” Michael Thorn, president of Fox Television Network, said in a statement obtained by the same media outlet.

The first season of Baywatch, which premiered in 1989, focused on the professional and personal lives of a team of lifeguards on the beaches of Los Angeles, primarily Santa Monica and Venice Beach.

“Together, Fox and Fremantle, along with Matt Nix and original co-creator Greg Bonann, will bring the California dream to a whole new generation of fans with groundbreaking stories, rising stars and all the spectacle that made the ‘Baywatch’ franchise a worldwide sensation,” Thorn added.

The series starring David Hasselhoff, Pamela Anderson, Michael Newman, Alexandra Paul, Yasmine Bleeth, Erika Eleniak, and Billy Warlock, became one of the most watched series worldwide.

Subsequently, ‘Baywatch’ spawned several spin-off series, including ‘Baywatch Nights’ and ‘Baywatch Hawaii’, which featured Jason Momoa, as well as a film adaptation released in 2017, starring Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron.

So far, reported Agencia EFE, the protagonists of this latest version have not been announced.
