Víctor Manuel Álvarez Puga, who has been a fugitive since 2021 on charges of tax evasion and money laundering in Mexico, is being held in immigration facilities in Miami, Florida (USA), according to reports on Monday.

The Attorney General’s Office said that on October 17, a U.S. immigration judge ordered the deportation of the businessman, but his lawyers appealed the measure and a judge will rule on the matter on November 12.

Regarding the arrest warrants, the Mexican authority added that the Ministry of Foreign Buzzy (SRE) was requested “to process the case with the U.S. authorities to obtain provisional detention for extradition purposes”.

In addition, he highlighted that an Interpol red notice of location was also obtained, as well as “the corresponding international arrest”.

This morning, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that she is awaiting the extradition of the businessman, without giving further details about his arrest.

On Monday, the arrest of Alvarez Puga, who was “in custody” of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at the Krome Detention Center in West Miami, was reported.

Although the reasons for his detention were not detailed, his stay in the center implies that the reasons are immigration-related, and he is expected to be deported to Mexico, where the Attorney General’s Office has been looking for him since September 2021, along with Gómez Mont.

Both are accused of embezzlement or embezzlement, organized crime and operations with resources of illicit origin, amounting to 3 billion pesos (more than 160 million dollars), for which an arrest warrant was issued against them.

The driver, the businessman and her brother, Alejandro Álvarez Puga, are allegedly involved in the use of shell companies that facilitate tax evasion, the diversion of public resources and money laundering by third parties, according to Mexican authorities, although she has declared her “innocence”.

The case has attracted media attention in Mexico due to Gomez Mont’s popularity with entertainment programs such as TV Azteca’s Ventaneando, while in the United States she made headlines when she appeared at a press conference dressed as a bride to propose to NFL quarterback Tom Brady in 2008.
