The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced Sunday that New York Helicopter, the company responsible for the tourist aircraft that crashed into the Hudson River this week, will cease operations “immediately” after the accident that claimed the lives of five Spanish citizens and a U.S. pilot.

The tragic event has sent shockwaves through both New York and Spain, while opening a debate on the regulation and safety controls on tourist flights offered in major U.S. cities.

What happened and why is it so serious?

The accident occurred on Thursday, April 10, when a 21-year-old Eurocopter AS350 helicopter lost parts of its fuselage in mid-flight before plunging into the Hudson River.

The impact was lethal for all six occupants on board.

Rescue teams from the Fire Department of New York (FDNY), City Police and Jersey City personnel recovered the lifeless bodies of the pilot and an entire Spanish family, identified as Agustín Escobar, a Siemens executive from Puertollano, Spain; his wife, Mercè Camprubí; and their three children, ages 10, 8 and 4.

The pilot, Seankese “Sean” Johnson, 36, was a former U.S. Navy pilot with years of military and civilian flight experience.

FAA: immediate suspension and operator review

Following the accident, the FAA publicly communicated via X (formerly Twitter) that New York Helicopter will cease operations immediately.

In addition, the agency indicated that an urgent review of the tour operator’s licensing, safety and maintenance record will be initiated.

At the same time, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) continues to lead the investigation to clarify the technical causes of the accident.

Political reaction: Chuck Schumer demands action

Senate Democratic Minority Leader Chuck Schumer held a press conference where he demanded the suspension of the operator’s license, noting that the company was flying “with minimal safety guarantees” and “may be prioritizing financial gain over human life.”

Schumer also emphasized the need for a comprehensive review of the air tourism sector, with special attention to older aircraft and civilian pilot training.

Why is this relevant to U.S. Hispanics?

Thousands of Latino tourists, including visitors from countries such as Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador and the Dominican Republic, opt each year for scenic helicopter flights over New York.

This incident puts the safety of these services, which are often not regulated with the same rigor as commercial flights, under scrutiny.

If you plan to take an air tour in the USA, it is essential to verify that:

The company is licensed by the FAA

The aircraft is properly registered and updated

The pilot has a verifiable track record

A pre-flight safety protocol is offered.
