The singer is devastated by what happened in his country

Renowned bachata and urban music singer, Prince Royce, used his official Instagram account to express his sorrow and solidarity after the tragic loss of life in the collapse of the roof of the Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

He has not been the only one to speak out after the tragedy that caused the death of merenguero Rubby Perez, as well as former ballplayers Octavio Dotel and Tony Blanco.

Through one of his Instagram stories, the urban music artist sent his condolences for the tragedy.

“My prayers for all those affected in the great tragedy that occurred in the discotheque in Santo Domingo,” he wrote.

“Peace and lots of strength,” he added in the message he simply posted with a black background and emojis of the Dominican Republic flag and praying hands.

Prince Royce, whose real name is Geoffrey Royce Rojas, is an American of Dominican origin.

He was born on May 11, 1989 in the Bronx, New York, to a Dominican immigrant family.

Therefore, although he is a U.S. citizen, he maintains a strong cultural and emotional bond with the Dominican Republic, something that is often reflected in his music and public statements.

In the early morning of April 8, 2025, during a performance by merenguero Rubby Pérez, the roof of the emblematic Jet Set nightclub collapsed, killing at least 66 people and injuring more than 160.

Among the victims, in addition to merenguero Rubby Pérez and former baseball players Octavio Dotel and Tony Blanco, were prominent figures such as Nelsy Cruz, governor of Monte Cristi and sister of Major League Baseball player Nelson Cruz.

Jet Set, the site of the tragedy

The Jet Set discotheque, founded in 1977, is known for being an icon of nightlife entertainment in Santo Domingo, attracting both locals and tourists with its varied musical offerings that include salsa, bachata and merengue.

Throughout the years, it has been the stage for presentations of national and international artists, consolidating itself as a reference in the city’s nightlife.

The artistic community has shown its solidarity in the face of this tragedy.

Artists such as Natti Natasha, originally from the Dominican Republic, also expressed their condolences and support to the affected families.

Dominican authorities have initiated an investigation to determine the exact causes of the collapse and to establish responsibilities.

Meanwhile, rescue teams continue to work in the area, and collection centers have been set up to receive donations for those affected.

This tragedy has highlighted the importance of ensuring safety in public facilities and has generated a call to review and reinforce the country’s infrastructure construction and maintenance regulations.
