Raul Macias was shot and killed in front of his children while trying to stop a fight between suspected gang members in Yakima, Washington. The community responds with solidarity.

An act of bravery ended in tragedy on May 12 at the Chesterley Skate Park when Raul Macias, a 36-year-old Hispanic father, was shot and killed while attempting to intervene in a fight between alleged gang members. The incident occurred around 7:20 p.m. and was witnessed by his own children, according to Yakima Police.

During the altercation, Jesus Ramiro Rodriguez, a 22-year-old identified as a member of the Norteños gang, shot Raul Macias.

The gun jammed, which prevented others from being injured, the Yakima County District Attorney’s Office said.

Rodriguez was arrested shortly thereafter near the park, with the assistance of the Washington State Police and the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office.

He is charged with second-degree murder, unlawful possession of a firearm and second-degree assault.

His bail was set at $200,000 by Judge Jeffery Swan.

In addition, he already had priors for domestic violence in 2024 and third-degree assault in 2019.

Raúl Macías leaves a huge void among his loved ones.

He was the father of three biological children and several adopted children, whom he loved deeply.

On social media, the community has begun to pay tribute to him, calling him a “hero without a cape” for his attempt to protect others in a time of danger.

A GoFundMe campaign has been organized by her family and friends to cover funeral expenses and provide immediate support for her children.

The funds will also be used for psychological counseling, long-term care and financial support for their future.
