Shakira will offer a completely free show in Mexico’s Zocalo

The head of the Mexico City Government, Clara Brugadaannounced that Colombian singer Shakira will offer a free concert next Sunday, March 1st in Mexico City’s Zócalo. The event will be sponsored by Grupo Modelowhich this year celebrates its centenary.

The announcement was made through a video posted on the President’s official account on X (formerly Twitter), where she appeared accompanied by Daniel Cocenzo, President of the brewing company.

In her message, Brugada stressed that access to the show will be completely free and detailed that, to facilitate the experience for attendees, giant screens will be placed along the Zócalo, extending along the Alameda Central and up to the Monumento a la Revolución (Monument to the Revolution).

During her speech, the head of government emphasized that the concert will not represent any expense for the capital’s administration. “It is being held at no cost to the government,” she said, noting that it is possible thanks to the support of Grupo Modelo, a company founded in Mexico City that is now commemorating 100 years of history.

Brugada described the show as “a great gift” for the citizens and publicly thanked the company for promoting an event of such magnitude. In the same vein, Daniel Cocenzo expressed his gratitude to the government of Mexico City for facilitating the concert: “Thank you very much for opening the doors of our home, the great Mexico City. We were born here 100 years ago with a brand that represents the ingenuity and quality made in Mexico,” he said.

The president framed the announcement in a speech that combined cultural and political elements. She defined the capital as “the city, capital of transformation and cultural epicenter of America”, and assured that she welcomes “with open arms the most beloved and universal artist of Barranquilla, Colombia”.

He also addressed a direct message to the singer: “Shakira, welcome to Mexico City, to this historic Zócalo, the scene of Mexico’s transformations and of great artistic events like the one we will have with you. With this, he highlighted the symbolic relevance of the Zócalo as a meeting place for citizens and the scene of historic events.
