Texas governor signs new electoral map: Republican Greg Abbott signed the redistricting law favorable to his party on Friday, August 29, advancing President Donald Trump’s plan to maintain a majority in the U.S. House of Representatives in the midterm elections.
“This map ensures fairer representation in Congress. Texas will be REDDER in Congress,” Abbott wrote in an X message in which he called the new electoral map “Big and Beautiful.”

The bill would secure five congressional districts for the Republican Party and affects several currently represented by Democrats, especially districts with Latino and African-American majorities.
The battle for the districts has just begun, as the new redistricting has already been sued in court.
Abbott will have to face the NAACP(National Association for the Advancement of Colored People), the largest and most influential civil rights organization in the U.S., which filed a lawsuit this week alleging that the new electoral map “deprives black voters of their political power.”
The lawsuit, filed jointly with Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, alleges that Texas has engaged in racial gerrymandering of election districts to prevent black voters from electing candidates of their choice.
LULAC, the oldest Hispanic organization in the U.S., filed a motion to supplement a legal complaint filed in 2021, which challenges the state’s original maps and argues that redistricting in the middle of the decade is unconstitutional.
The Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF) has also joined in legal litigation, which promises to be an obstacle to the state’s ability to implement the new districts.
Republicans in states like Utah already have a free hand to follow in Texas’ footsteps as part of Trump’s plan.
That prompted a response from Democratic states to advance their congressional maps, which are usually done every 10 years, based on census figures.
The battleground between the two major parties in the United States has been joined by California.
In that state, Governor Gavin Newsom signed several laws to call elections in November.
The above in order to pass a new congressional map that will help the Democratic Party gain five more seats in the House of Representatives in 2026 and thus counter Republican efforts to retain the majority.
“Congratulations on your new position as Trump’s number one lapdog, I know you worked hard for it!” he said today in an X Newsom message about Abbott and the bill signing.
The blue party’s best chance to counter Republican redistricting is in California, a predominantly Democratic state that has the largest number of congressional districts in the country, with 52.
Este mapa garantiza una representación más justa en el Congreso. Texas será más ROJO en el Congreso
