The Conjuring: Last Rites’, the supernatural horror film directed by Michael Chaves and starring Vera Farmiga, became this weekend the best opening of the genre so far this year and the third in history, with a collection of 104 million at the international box office and 83 million in the North American market, according to the specialized website Box Office Mojo.
Variety noted that this is the best start of the year for a horror film, ahead of ‘Final Destination: Bloodlines’, which made $51.6 million in the U.S. and $102 million internationally in May.
Likewise, this ninth installment of ‘The Conjuring’ universe was crowned as the third best opening for a film of that genre in history after two other titles that are also from Warner Bros.: ‘It’ (2017), with 123 million in the U.S., and ‘It: Chapter II’ (2019), with 91.
The film was expected to debut with a U.S. gross of $50 million.
