What many analysts in Washington called a definitive “stress test” to measure Donald Trump’s validity in his current term, ended up turning into a real political massacre for his domestic detractors.

This Tuesday, the results of the Indiana primary sent a seismic signal across the country: the current president of the United States not only governs from the White House, but maintains absolute control over his party’s structure.

Trump’s candidates win in Indiana

The strategy was executed with a surgical precision that has left moderates shaking in their seats.

Trump’s goal was not simply to win seats, but to collect an outstanding political debt from the top of the executive branch.

He set his sights on seven Republican state senators who last year dared to challenge his leadership, blocking his ambitious plan to redraw the state’s congressional districts (the tactic known as gerrymandering).

The result of the day was overwhelming: five of the seven candidates publicly backed by the president managed to win, literally sweeping away the political careers of most of the senators who tried to stop their agenda.

This internal “cleansing” ensures that Indiana’s next representatives will be absolute loyalists to the nation’s project that Trump is leading in this second presidential term.

A vital respite for the White House

This victory comes at a time of high tension for the current administration.

With popularity that the most recent data put at between 30% and 35%, and disapproval levels exceeding 60%, Trump needed a victory that would change the narrative of his administration.

Between the social unrest over the unstoppable increase in gasoline and the exhausting negotiations to close the Iran war, Indiana becomes the oxygen tank the president needed to reaffirm that his electoral base is still intact.

Kevin Roberts, president of the Heritage Foundation, was quick to celebrate the incumbent’s victory, “The Indiana primary should give conservatives hope that we can unseat politicians who talk like conservatives but ultimately end up helping the left.”

For the party’s most hard-line wing, this is the beginning of a necessary purge led from the Oval Office.

Gerrymandering and the new map of power

Beyond the names, Trump’s win in Indiana has strategic implications for the future of his presidency.

By placing his loyal pieces on the state board, the president ensures that the redrawing of electoral maps goes forward, a key tactic to shield Republican victories in the South and other critical regions of the country.

With the recent Supreme Court ruling allowing the splitting of majority African-American districts, the way is clear for the current administration to use the electoral map as its best weapon for the upcoming midterm elections.

What about you Onnda, do you think this show of force from the White House is enough for Trump to keep Congress or will this internal “cleansing” end up alienating independent voters?
