White House sparks outrage with AI image for 5 de mayo

Los demócratas responden con "golpe bajo"

What should be a celebration of Mexican-American heritage turned into a digital battleground on Tuesday. The White House, under Donald Trump’s administration, decided to “celebrate” Cinco de Mayo by throwing a sarcasm- and AI-laden dart at Democratic leaders Hakeem Jeffries and Chuck Schumer.

Hats, daisies and a controversial poster

In an AI-generated image that went viral in seconds, Jeffries and Schumer are shown sitting in front of a border wall, sporting huge jarano hats and toasting with margaritas.

The most explosive touch: a sign in the background with the phrase “I love illegal immigrants,” surrounded by tortilla chips, salsa and cactus in a clear mockery of the opposition’s immigration stance.

“Happy Cinco de Mayo to all who celebrate it,” posted the official White House account on X, unleashing a wave of criticism for the use of stereotypes and digital tools for political attack.

The “knockout” of Chuck Schumer

But if the White House thought it would get the last word, it was wrong.

Chuck Schumer was quick to respond in kind. The Democratic leader posted another AI-edited image showing Donald Trump posing very smiling next to the late child molester Jeffrey Epstein, both wearing the same colorful hats from the original parody. “Happy Cinco de Mayo, White House!” wrote Schumer, in a counterattack that left everyone in shock.

AI: Trump’s new weapon

This is not the first time the administration has resorted to deepfakes or manipulated content to ridicule its rivals.

Previously, Jeffries had already been the target of videos with fake mustaches and cloned voices imitating Schumer hurling insults.

While the community celebrates Mexico’s victory at the Battle of Puebla in 1867, in Washington the battle is over who dominates the narrative (and Photoshop) on social media.

Do you think these AI taunts are disrespectful to Mexican culture or is it just the new “humor” of modern politics?
