The President of the United States and absolute leader of the conservative wing, Donald Trump, has decided to intervene directly in the political crisis in Texas.

After a primary day that left the party divided and headed for a costly runoff in May, Trump used his Truth Social platform to demand an immediate ceasefire and take care of Texas primary.

“For the good of the party and our country, the Texas primary should not continue,” the president said in a publication that shook Republican structures on Wednesday.

Trump said that in the coming days he will announce his official endorsement of one of the two contenders and was categorical.

The candidate who does not receive their “blessing” must drop out of the race immediately, to prevent the party from arriving weakened to the November elections.

This maneuver seeks to stop the bleeding of resources and personal attacks between incumbent Senator John Cornyn and Attorney General Ken Paxton.

John Cornyn, a veteran of more than 20 years in the seat, represents the old guard.

While Paxton, a close ally of Governor Greg Abbott, leads the far-right agenda with controversial stances against immigration and LGBTQ+ rights.

Fear of the “Talaric factor

Trump’s urgency is no accident.

While Republicans bicker, the Democratic side celebrates the meteoric rise of James Talarico.

The young Presbyterian legislator and seminarian not only won his primary, but did so with historic turnout records, making him the biggest threat Republicans have faced in Texas since 1994.

Talarico has managed to unify the Latino and moderate vote, a ground that Trump is not willing to cede.

Talarico is already considered a rising star and has led Democrats to be confident that they can wrest control of the state from the Republicans.

No blue party candidate has won a statewide election in Texas since 1994.

“The candidate who does not receive my support must withdraw,” insisted the president, aware that a three-month-plus Republican civil war (until the May runoff) could leave the way clear for Democrats to paint the Lone Star State blue.

A scenario of scandals and veteran

Trump’s decision is a difficult one: on the one hand, he has Ken Paxton, a controversial figure who has survived political trials and corruption allegations.

On the other, John Cornyn, whose loyalty to “Trumpism” has been questioned by the most radical sectors.

With this announcement, the president retakes control of the narrative and sends shivers down the spines of the Texas political class.

The question now is: which of the two will bow down to the will of the “Commander in Chief”?
