One of the strangest plays of the 2026 MLB season occurred at Angel Stadium during the game between the Los Angeles Angels and Colorado Rockies, as what appeared to be a controllable fly ball ended up becoming an unexpected home run after the ball bounced off the head of right fielder Jo Adell and over the fence.
The action happened in the top of the fourth inning, when TJ Rumfield connected on a deep fly to right-center field. Adell followed the trajectory of the ball and arrived in time to attempt the catch, but the hit first grazed his glove, then hit the top of his cap and finally over the yellow line of the wall. The result was a solo home run for Rumfield on a play that quickly went viral because of the unusual sequence.
A play that recalled José Canseco

The image drew immediate comparisons to one of the most famous errors in major league history.
On May 26, 1993, Jose Canseco, then an outfielder for the Texas Rangers, saw a ball hit by Carlos Martinez hit him in the head and he ended up leaving the park.
More than three decades later, Adell’s play revived that memory among fans and commentators.
Although the circumstances were different, the outcome was similar:

A difficult night for Jo Adell

The timing was especially striking because Adell has had outstanding defensive performances with the Angels.
In fact, during this same season he made headlines by stealing three homers in a game against Seattle.
A sample of his athletic ability in the gardens.
However, baseball also has such unpredictable scenes.
In a matter of seconds, a routine play can be transformed into an image that can travel through social networks, sports news and conversations among fans.
For the Angels, the hit extended Colorado’s lead at that point in the game.
For Adell, it was an unfortunate move.
But also a reminder of how difficult it can be to defend in the outfield when the ball carries power, height and a complicated trajectory (Filed under: MLB unusual home run hits Adell).
