The recent wave of violence in Jalisco has raised doubts about Guadalajara’s viability as a host city for the 2026 World Cup, especially after the riots that followed the federal operation that culminated in the death of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, alias “El Mencho”.
In light of this scenario, questions have arisen as to whether the Akron Stadium, one of the venues confirmed for the 2026 World Cup, could lose scheduled matches.
What does FIFA say?

So far, Guadalajara remains officially confirmed as the host city for the 2026 World Cup, a tournament to be organized by Mexico, the United States and Canada.
However, it has been confirmed that there is a review of the playoff matches (intercontinental playoffs) scheduled for March 26 and 31, 2026 at the Akron Stadium.
Guadalajara was assigned to host one of the playoffs for the 2026 World Cup, in which teams from Oceania, CONCACAF and Africa will participate.
Scheduled playoff matches:
March 26, 2026: New Caledonia vs Jamaica
March 31, 2026: Winner vs. Democratic Republic of Congo
For now, there is no official announcement of a change of venue.
