Nick Reiner pleaded not guilty Monday to the alleged murder of his parents, director Rob and Michele Reiner, in state court in downtown Los Angeles.
Reiner, 32, faces two counts of first-degree murder for the death of his parents last Dec. 14.
The case involves “special circumstances,” aggravating circumstances that California law makes eligible for the death penalty or life in prison without parole.
According to NBC, Reiner was wearing a tan one-piece garment, had his hair shaved and only spoke in court to waive his right to a speedy trial, which means agreeing to a trial beyond the statutory time limit.
Reiner’s next court appearance is set for April 29.
The murder of director Rob Reiner continues to be the talk of the town

The arraignment was scheduled for January 7, but was delayed after her criminal defense attorney, Alan Jackson, who in the past has represented the likes of Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey, withdrew from the case.
Reiner, who remains in jail without bail, was assigned public defender Kimberly Green as his legal representative.
‘When Harry Met Sally’ director Rob Reiner and photographer Michele Singer Reiner were found stabbed inside their Brentwood home on Dec. 14, and the Reiner family’s middle son was arrested a day later.
The couple was found by their daughter, who arrived at the house after a masseuse called to let her know her parents were not answering the door, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Nick Reiner had spoken publicly about his years-long struggle with substance addiction.
He was also diagnosed with schizophrenia several years ago, while some media reported that he was receiving treatment for a severe psychiatric disorder at the time of the murder, so this condition is expected to play a relevant role in the case, reported Agencia EFE.
