‘One Battle After Another’ lived up to its name and conquered a night predicted for its victory at the Golden Globes, winning four awards in the comedy or musical categories at a gala that for the second year in a row showed its admiration for Brazilian cinema thanks to ‘The Secret Agent’.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s film, which follows an ex-revolutionary who is forced to rescue his teenage daughter from his former nemesis, won Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actress for Teyana Taylor and Best Screenplay.

Anderson snatched from Mexico’s Guillermo del Toro the opportunity to win his second Golden Globe in the directing category with the adaptation of his literary work ‘Frankenstein’.

Meanwhile, Chloé Zhao’s drama about a young William Shakespeare stood out in the drama categories, winning Best Film and Best Actress for Jessie Buckley.

Timothée Chalamet won the first Golden Globe of his career for his work in the biopic ‘Marty Supreme’, and in his speech he thanked his family and his partner, influencer Kylie Jenner, who accompanied him in the audience.

“In the past I left empty-handed, but with my head held high, grateful just to be here. I would be lying if I didn’t say that those moments have made this moment that much sweeter,” said the actor.

Meanwhile, Rose Byrne won Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical for ‘If I Had Legs I’d Kick You’.

Brazil makes history and ‘Sirat’ leaves empty-handed

Wagner Moura made history by becoming the first Brazilian actor to win a Golden Globe for ‘The Secret Agent’, following in the footsteps of his fellow Brazilian Fernanda Torres, who in the last edition achieved the same milestone in the female category for the film ‘I’m Still Here’.

The film by Brazilian Kleber Mendonça Filho also won ‘Sirat’, by French-Galician Oliver Laxe, in the Best Foreign Language Film category.

In addition, the only Spanish film of the edition ended empty-handed after Ludwig Göransson, from ‘Sinners’, beat French composer Kangding Ray in the best soundtrack category.

The Norwegian ‘Sentimental Value’, which started with eight nominations, only won the award for best supporting actor in drama thanks to Stellan Skarsgård’s performance.

Both the Swedish actor and Anderson defended during their speeches that the films should continue to be played in theaters, a criticism that comes amid titan Warner Bros.’ negotiations with Paramount and Netflix.

The gala also awarded the South Korean phenomenon ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ with the titles of best animated film and best song for the musical hit ‘Golden’, meeting the projections of Hollywood’s specialized press.

And in TV, ‘Adolescence’ consecrates its momentum.

Netflix phenomenon ‘Adolescence’ swept the TV categories, winning four awards, followed by medical drama ‘The Pitt’ and comedy ‘The Studio’, which racked up two awards each.

The series about a 13-year-old boy named Jamie, arrested for the murder of a classmate, took the award for Best Miniseries, while British actors Owen Cooper and Stephen Graham repeated the same Emmy formula and won the Golden Globe for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor.

Also Erin Doherty, who plays the psychologist in the third episode of the series, won Best Supporting Actress.

A decaffeinated gala, with little political lashing and a lot of humor

In a gala that stood out precisely for the few nods to the loaded international current affairs, the creator of the series ‘The Pitt’, R. Scott Gemmil, was one of the few to make reference to the political situation in the U.S..

“We live in a very divided country and world right now, but I think film and television brings us all together, not just as an audience, but as a community,” he said.

For her part, the gala’s host, comedian Nikki Glaser, was in charge of bringing a touch of humor to the event, with light-hearted jokes, overacted sequences and jokes especially aimed at Leonardo DiCaprio, whom she claimed to be too private with his life, recalling his teenage interviews.

“Is pasta still your favorite food?” asked Glaser as the celebrated actor nodded his head.

Hollywood legends such as Julia Roberts hardly had a starring role at the gala: she gave the award for best comedy or musical film, but was possibly the most applauded of the night. The entire room welcomed her with standing ovations and applause, to the point that she even said: “I’m going to be unbearable for a week after that,” reported Agencia EFE.
