Guillermo del Toro was nominated for Best Director of a Motion Picture at the DGA Awards, given by the Directors Guild of Hollywood, for ‘Frankenstein’.

The Mexican will compete for the award alongside Paul Thomas Anderson (‘One Battle After Another’), Chloé Zhao (‘Hamnet’), Ryan Coogler (‘Sinners’) and ‘Josh Safdie (‘Marty Supreme’).

These awards are usually a strong indicator in the Oscar race. In 2018 Del Toro was nominated in the same category for ‘The Shape of Water’, a film with which he won his first Oscar as a director and which in that same edition also won Best Picture.

Throughout the history of these awards, only eight winners in this category have failed to convert their win into a Best Director Oscar, and only two films that won the Best Picture Oscar had not previously won the DGA award.

The Best First Film category will be contested by Hasan Hadi (‘The President’s Cake’); Harry Lighton, (‘Pillion’); Alex Russell, (‘Lurker’); Charlie Polinger, (‘The Plague’), as well as Eva Victor, ‘Sorry, Baby’.

The 78th DGA Awards will announce the winners on February 7 in Los Angeles, reported Agencia EFE.
