The participation of Congressman Sergio Mayer in the reality show La Casa de los Famosos unleashed a strong controversy that has now reached the legislative arena. After requesting a leave of absence to participate in the program, the Morena Morena in the Chamber of Deputies is promoting an initiative to modify the rules under which legislators may leave their posts.

The case has opened a debate on the boundaries between public life, entertainment and political responsibility.

Sergio Mayer and his controversial participation in ‘La Casa de los Famosos’: An initiative to set limits

The group of deputies formed by Herminia López, Emilio Ramón Ramírez Guzmán and Gloria Sánchez presented a proposal to reform article 12 of the legislative regulations. The objective is to establish stricter criteria on licenses, avoiding their use for recreational or entertainment purposes.

According to the legislators, it is necessary to guarantee that those who hold public office maintain their commitment to the citizens and do not abandon their functions for reasons unrelated to public service.

The controversy began when Sergio Mayer requested a leave of absence in February without publicly stating the reasons for his decision. Days later, his participation in La Casa de los Famosos, a program known for isolating celebrities and broadcasting their coexistence 24 hours a day, was confirmed.

The congressman defended his decision by arguing that his presence could serve to send positive messages about Latino culture and described his participation as a “social experiment”. However, these statements failed to stem the criticism, and his stay on the reality show was short-lived, as he was eliminated by a vote of the public.

While Mayer remained in the program, his alternate, Luis Morales Flores, took his place in the Chamber of Deputies and participated in relevant debates, such as the Electoral Reform.

Morales Flores spoke in favor of the initiative -popularly called in networks as “Anti Mayer Law”- and pointed out the importance of clearly defining the valid causes for requesting a leave of absence. Among them, he mentioned health reasons, functions in other public offices, candidacies or judicial processes.

In addition, he emphasized that Congress should not become a space linked to entertainment, but should remain a place of work and commitment to the citizens.

Criticism from different fronts

The controversy also generated reactions from other benches. Congressman Juan Ignacio Zavalaof Movimiento Ciudadano, questioned Mayer’s reinstatement, pointing out that he did not prioritize his responsibilities as a public servant.

Several legislators agreed that the performance in Congress should be the main responsibility of those who occupy a seat, reinforcing the debate on ethics in the exercise of the office.

After his return to San Lazaro, Sergio Mayer acknowledged that requesting a leave of absence to participate in the reality show was a mistake. He apologized to those who felt offended, although he defended the legality of his decision and his right to resume his duties.

However, he also left open the possibility of applying for another license in the future, which has reinforced his party’s intention to push for changes in the regulations.

Thus, Mayer’s case has not only generated media controversy, but could also lead to a reform that redefines the boundaries between politics and entertainment in Mexico.
