Mexico City became the epicenter of the musical universe on Wednesday. After almost four years of absence and a mandatory break for military service, the seven members of BTS, the most influential K-Pop band on the planet, made their triumphant entrance to Mexican soil.

But it was no ordinary arrival; the South Korean idols were received by President Claudia Sheinbaum in a public act that will remain marked in the memory of the more than four million fans (ARMY) residing in the country.

BTS returns to Mexico

From the balconies of the National Palace, the seat of the Executive was transformed into an improvised stage.

To the deafening screams of thousands of fans that packed the Zócalo esplanade, the band members greeted their loyal audience.

“Hello, we are BTS. Thank you so much for seeing us, we can’t wait for the concerts to start, I love you, I love you,” said one of the members, unleashing sobs and euphoria that could be heard all the way to the surrounding streets.

President Sheinbaum, aware of the cultural weight and economic spillover that this visit represents, did not miss the opportunity to launch a petition that made the entire stadium vibrate.

“I have told them that they have to come back next year,” said the president, assuring that she has already negotiated an official letter with the Korean government to expand the cultural link between the two nations.

Hours in the Sun: The ARMY Sacrifice

In over 30 degrees Celsius and under an unrelenting sun, the ARMY showed why it is the most passionate fandom.

The capital’s government had to provide hoses with water jets to refresh the crowd that had been waiting since early morning.

For Josh, a fan who has waited 11 years for this moment, fatigue doesn’t matter: “They are my treasure, my life,” he explained while holding official merchandise with the faces of his idols.

The visit is especially emotional because it marks the kick-off of the ‘Arirang’ tour, the band’s first international tour after fulfilling their military obligations in South Korea.

Mexico was chosen as the starting point, consolidating the country as a “cultural boom” and a strategic location for the Asian entertainment industry.

Concerts and the ticket odyssey

Although the dates at the GNP Stadium (formerly Foro Sol) for Thursday, Saturday and Sunday are completely sold out after virtual lines that lasted for days, the band’s presence in the Zócalo was a gift for those who did not get tickets.

Fans like Marta, 20, approached them in the hope of seeing them at least for a second up close: “I want them to see that we made it, that Mexico was always waiting for them”.
